Touchuppaint Guide: How to Use Aerosol Spray Paint

Achieving exceptional results with car paint aerosols is possible when fixing car panels and bumpers. Colour match aerosol paint is the ideal choice for larger areas and more complex repairs that need seamless integration with the existing bodywork. For minor damage like scratches or chips, consider using a precision pen or a bottle with a brush. Our bodyshop-grade paint is an exact match to your car's original colour. Here's the best practice guide for using and applying touch-up car paint when using an aerosol.

How to Use Car Paint Aerosols

Prepare & Clean

  1. Use Primer: Depending on the extent of the damage, in most cases with car paint aerosols, it's recommended to use a primer first.

  2. Surface Preparation: Start by flattening down the damaged area using wet and dry sandpaper to ensure any defects are diminished.

  3. Clean and Dry: The surface must be clean and dry. Make sure to remove all wax, polish, and grease.

Shake & Test

  1. Shake Aerosol: Shake the aerosol for 2-3 minutes to ensure that the paint within the can is mixed properly.

  2. Color Test: Before applying the paint to the vehicle, it's recommended to test the color and determine the spray pattern you require. You can adjust the nozzle to spray horizontally or vertically.

  3. Test on White Card: On a white card, check how many coats you require to match the original color. Too few coats will look too light, while too many coats will make the color too dark.

Paint & Finish

  1. Application: Apply the paint either vertically or horizontally in smooth, cross coats, maintaining a distance of 250mm from the repair.

  2. Drying Time: Allow the paint to dry for 15 minutes before applying a second coat if necessary. Leave it to dry for 4 hours before applying Touchuppaint lacquer.

  3. Cleaning: After use, turn the aerosol upside down to empty the nozzle valve for cleaning. This ensures that it can be reused at a later date.

PLEASE NOTE: Aerosols should not be applied in cold, damp weather as it will adversely affect the application, finish, and drying time.

The recommended minimum temperature for using spray paint is 15+ degrees, preferably in a room with room temperature indoors and in a warm, well-ventilated area.

Touchuppaint Spray Paint Top Tips

The Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Use a Primer: Use a primer first if bare metal or plastic is visible or in particularly deep scratches or chips.
  • Test the Color: After giving it a good shake, test the color as different paints in the mixture may settle differently. It needs to be thoroughly shaken and tested in a discreet area to compare.
  • Use a Lacquer: Use a lacquer if the paint is very metallic or pearlescent.

DO NOT:

  • Get Paint on Original Undamaged Paintwork: Avoid getting paint on original undamaged paintwork as it will make the colour darker and draw attention to the repaired area.
  • Apply Paint in Cold, Damp Weather: Do not apply paint in cold, damp weather as it will affect the application and finish, especially with aerosols.
  • Apply Thick Layers: Do not apply the paint too thick. To achieve the best results and avoid running drops, it requires thin layers to build up to the original height.
  • Use a Power Washer: Do not wash your car with a power washer for the first week after touching up car paintwork.
