How to use car paint aerosols

Our colour-matched car aerosol is a basecoat. Plan the preparation and compatible clear lacquer before you start.

  1. Plan the complete coating system

The colour-matched car aerosol is a basecoat. It needs compatible clear lacquer. Check which primer, colour and lacquer are included in your chosen pack and confirm their suitability for the surface.

  2. Choose a suitable work area

Read the can labels and safety sheets before use. Follow their requirements for ventilation, personal protection, temperature and ignition sources. Protect surrounding areas from overspray.

  3. Prepare and mask

Clean the surface, remove loose material and prepare it to the standard required by the coating instructions. Use the specified abrasive grades and suitable primer where needed. Mask the surrounding finish carefully.

  4. Shake and make a spray test

Shake the can for the time stated on its label. Test the spray pattern and colour on a suitable prepared sample before spraying the repair. Let the test colour dry before judging the match.

  5. Apply the basecoat

Use the distance, movement and coat sequence on the supplied instructions. Apply controlled coats without flooding the surface. Follow the stated flash-off and recoat intervals.

  6. Apply compatible clear lacquer

Apply lacquer within the basecoat system’s specified overcoating window. Follow the lacquer’s own directions for coats, flash-off and curing. Do not substitute generic timing for the product instructions.

  7. Allow the finish to cure

Protect the job while it dries. Follow the full cure guidance before handling, refitting, washing or polishing. Keep any remaining cans stored as directed.
